Journal 2: Responding to "Responding..."

Read and respond to Richard Straub’s “Responding—Really Responding—to Other Students’ Writing.” What were you ideas and attitudes toward revising and responding before reading Straub's essay? Have your opinions changed? How? How can you apply what Straub said to your first workshop? What did you learn about responding to your peers?

Due: Wednesday, June 30

  1. My profile still does not have the new post button, Im not sure what im doing wrong....

Before reading Straub's essay I had little interest in other peoples writing. If it sounded decent and there were no grammatical errors then I thought they did a good job. I never really thought the the writer would want to hear critism on something they worked so hard on. But after reading the essay I can see how it is beneifcial to both the writer and the reader. In our first workshop, we can all make sure to listen to the critism and learn from other peoples opinions and mistakes which in term will better ourselves as writers.

  2. Mine does not have the button either...

Straub's essay really opened my eyes to what revising a paper is really about. In the past I have just skimmed over papers hunting down spelling errors and grammatical mistakes because I truly did not know what else to do. As long as everything was in order I never criticized or sugggested anthing, partly in fear of offending the writer. However, after reading Straub's opinions and tips I feel like I have a whole new approach to revising papers. I've learned to take my time reading through the paper and that you owe it to the writer to give them a thorough examination. In our first class workshop I can utilize the tips and skills that I picked up from Straub, and hopefully help myself and others improve their writing.
