style journal

My voice certainly changes depending on my audience. If I'm talking to a bunch of pre-schoolers, than my voice is most likely to raise in pitch and my word choice will be very simple and easy for 4 year olds to comprehend. Another style of voice is the one that I would use with my parents. My tone is usually one that sounds annoyed, and my word choice is usually very short. However, if I would like to go somewhere, my voice becomes sweet and the words are drawn out. Whenever talking to an adult, employer, or teacher, my voice in an email or in a conversation tends to sound very formal and intelligent (hopefully this is how i sound most of the time). So yes, the voice does alter to its selected audiences.

the bad looks too old fashion while the good has all its links close together, pictures, and attracts your attention with a nice light blue while the bad site has a brownish background.

Stylish!

Consider your style/voice. Vonnegut’s style is like a “band saw cutting galvanized steel.” Does your style change depending on your audience?

http://thebiguglywebsite.com/

Well, the name says it all. It's quite an ugly website. Of course, I think the creator of the website was intending for it to be that way. But it's a good example of what NOT to do. In other words, don't choose an unappealing background color. Also, the font and color choices don't even go together. Nor is it easy to browse through.

This website, on the other hand, is awesome. Apart from being my favorite website (just because it's my favorite store) the layout just goes together. They also are good at advertisements since the first thing you see upon entering the website is a big discount logo. The website is easy to browse through, since it's broken into categories. All the colors flow together and match. Overall, it's just appealing to the eye. :)

ugly: http://cmdshiftdesign.com/ilovesmekitty/
pretty: http://kimkardashian.celebuzz.com/

The ugly website is not organized well. It has very unattractive photos and nothing matches or flows. You have one photo with a red border and then another photo with a white background when the background of the whole site is pink cats. The font of the site is not even the same through out. The website also does not use the right grammar and doesn't use capital letters. The website is about someones cat, which no one really cares about, so its not using either logos, pathos or ethos.
The pretty website is very appealing to the eye. Everything is matching, it is very well organized and the links are easy to find and use. It is all black and shiny, with diamonds and glitter, which attracts and draws the eye in. This website uses ethos by showing credibility, the home page has a big picture of Kim Kardashian that draws everyones attention. As well, every page has small photos at the top of the toolbar of Kim and activities shes done in her life.

http://petdr.com/

The Petdr website is the website that I chose as the ugly one. It is visually unappealing. The background color is dull and makes me want to fall asleep. On top of that, it is a color that doesn’t match with much. The whole website is full of clashing colors. It’s also disorganized. It has a bunch of links and pictures scattered and cluttered all around the website. It looks as if it was designed by someone very inexperienced. The website looks like its attempting to use pathos in order to get clients to come to this pet dr but it fails because the pictures don’t touch me as much as they should.

http://www.beyonceonline.com/us/home

Beyonce’s official website is the one I chose as the attractive one. It looks as if it was created by a professional who took a long time designing the layout. The colors are easy on the eyes and look good on the computer screen. The website has several pictures where Beyonce looks beautiful. It is a website that isn’t confusing and is easy to explore. This website uses ethos in order to draw the fans in.

ugly website: www.broslikethissite.com

This is a blogger website that comments on the life of a "bro". This website is no that appealing to the eye because it looks like it is a cheaply made website that maybe one man designed. It definitely doesn't have the same type of visual appeal as a company website.

Pretty site: www.youtube.com

This is the most sophisticated video site that i have come across so far. It has just about every video that you can think of and more. Also it is designed very well and has very user-friendly features that make it an easy to use site. For example, it has predictive text input so it guesses what you are trying to say and gives you options to click on. It is also very aesthetically appealing and looks like a very professional site that they paid to have designed.
Ugly> www.godhatesfags.com This website is terrible, it has terrible knowledge. This website does not even look good, or appealing, not to mention the morals are terrible. No one should go here, this site should be banned.

Pretty> www.espn.go Espn, displays all sports scores and info it is all graphic and wonderfully

Ugly Website: http://www.nikibrown.com/designoblog/2009/03/03/the-worlds-ugliest-websites/

This website is just flat out hideous. The title of the site itself doesn’t explain what the site is all about what so ever. There are many random colors and shapes all over the place that hold next to no meaning in them. Not only does the title and coloring not go together, but the organization is way off as well. This website really is hard on the eyes. This site looks incredible, and has no logic in its construction.

Good website: http://www.addictinggames.com/index.html

This is a gaming website chalk full of all sorts of different activities. This websites lay out is the exact opposite of the previous website. The entire site uses a nice and neat uniform blue, giving it a nice sense of familiarity. The organization is top notch, with every single game on the site being organized into a certain category. The title of this site is very self explanatory as well. It is interesting though, because at one point in time; this exact website would have been put into the “ugly” site category.

www.facebook.com

Although this is perhaps the most commonly used website in the world, Facebook has a rather blank and unappealing look to it. There are only two colors in it: blue and white. Also there is only one color of text: black. Sure there may be the small pictures on the homepage, but to an extent, they all look similar. There is no pathos because of how blank the scenery is. Logos and ethos are nonexistant as well on Facebook.

http://boston.redsox.mlb.com

The official website of the Boston Red Sox is appealing in many ways. It has many different colors and is themed for the team. There are many pictures of the stadium and the players as well. The text is also in different colors and is easy to read. This site uses logos because it contains stats from the previous night's game as well as others. There is ethos because there are video interviews on here with coaches and baseball experts. Lastly there is pathos because a website such as this appeals to the emotions of baseball fans and especially Red Sox fans.

http://www.martinlutherking.org/
The first website I examined was one that we actually looked at in class. This Martin Luther King Jr. website is definitely an ugly website. The background and the whole color scheme of the website is very bland and boring. The picture of Mr. King in the middle looks self generated. Also, the text on the webpage has no organization and the font is very unprofessional. The small rants and comments on the page about getting rid of MLK Day show that the website opposes Martin Luther King Jr. The unprofessional visuals and inappropriate text hinder the credibility of the website.

http://www.philadelphiaeagles.com/index.html
The second website is very attractive especially compared to the Martin Luther King Jr. site. The site is for the Philadelphia Eagles football team and it definitely has an emotional pull towards an Eagles fan. The visuals are very vibrant and there is live video coverage of the Eagles training camp online. On the site there are sections for player statistics and team standings. It is very informative and uses a lot of factual information which is appeals to logos. Overall, the visual and textual detail put into this site creates so much credibility and makes it attractive.
ugly: http://www.worldsmostboringwebsite.com/
pretty: http://www.seventeen.com/

The first website is ugly and unappealing first off because nothing catches the eye. There is no color at all and all the text is gray. Not only is all of the text the same color, but it is all the same size with no emphasis on anything interesting. There isn't much information, and the point of this website is to actually bore you. Half the page is google ads and the rest is mostly white space. The second website is pretty because there are a lot of different colors and styles throughout the page. The stories that are meant to interest the reader have titles that stand out either by type of text or color. The pictures change periodically and hold our attention. The pictures and headlines are intriguing and make me want to stay on the website.

craigslist.org & yahoo.com

Craigslist.org is the poorly designed site. There are only two colors being used. There aren't any captions or pictures. All of the words are in the same font and font size, so it makes the categories harder to separate between each other. This website just isn't appealing to the human eye.
The yahoo website has everything you can possibly be looking for. You can use the tabs on the side of the page with pictures are just use the search engine. There are plenty of pictures being used and differently sized and colored font which make figuring out how to use the website very simple. This website is definitely more appealing to the human eye. I think anyone would rather look at this website over the craigslist website.

Pretty : http://www.ladygaga.com/theremix/
Ugly: http://top40.about.com/od/l/p/ladygaga.htm

The first website is pretty becuase its cery visually appealing. There is a picture of Lady Gaga from her new album coming out soon right when you first get to the page. The text on the right half of the website is easily readable and all of the colors on the page correlate. They match the picture of Lady Gaga which brings it all together. There arent too many colors on the page, but thats what makes it so pretty and easy to look at. It has just enough to blend the visual and textual elements together. The ugly page on the other hand has onlyone small picture and is really boring to look at. The text is small and there are too many ads all around. The ads on the page are distracting and visually unappealing. The elements on the page are a little chaotic which makes the website hard to figure out to get anywhere else.

Ugly :( http://www.indianchild.com/what_do_animals_see.htm
Pretty :) http://dsc.discovery.com/tv/life/

The first website is very boring and unappealing. There is a total of about 4 colors shown on the page. There is one small image at the top, and the rest are advertisements. This website definitely doesn't appeal to pathos, and neither to ethos, because we are not sure of where this information came from. It may appeal to logos in a way that there are facts given about animals. The discovery channel website is beaming with the blue and green colors, and the large image of the lizard. The website appeals to ethos, giving that the images shown have been taken by very professional photography. It doesn't appeal to pathos as much because it is a website, based on facts and the Tv show. The website appeals to logos in such ways as many maps, articles, and videos about the wildlife.

ugly truth

http://www.spaceistheplace.ca/ <-----u g l y
http://ugsmag.com/ <------ PRETTY

The ugly website is just one i picked that is horribly designed. Its plain and boring and i don't even really know what the point of it is because i didn't bother to really read it. it uses no ethos, pathos, or logos whatsoever, as its just some regular joe who isn't really anyone important or has any significance to having a page. the other page, though is extremely appealing to the eye. it's a hip-hop magazine that beautifully uses all three rhetorical devices because they're known by their followers, shows depth in it's drawings and pictures, and also talks about known and underground hip-hop artists. if you have no ethos to begin with like the first website its hard to find followers, but i think the reason the other website is more appealing has more to do with its placement of the pictures and also how cool and attractive the background is.
