Journal 5

http://kidshealth.org/kid/watch/house/smoking.html

This webpage is intended for kids to know what smoking can do to your body and why it is really bad for you to smoke. The website has a cartoon picture of what looks like men dressed up in bomb squad outfits getting rid of the stink. The picture parallels something like a skunk that kids can relate that they are smelly to a cigarette. This page is accurate in what it is trying to say. The colors are simple, but inviting for a child’s eye. Some of the things that kids worry about the most at their age like appearance is highlighted so it can be picked up quickly from the eye. There is even a listen button for kids who don’t feel like reading the information being displayed. In this case, the image is doing something more rhetorically then the words because it is just something that can be looked at very quickly and the point can be given without having to read more then two words.

  1. It seems like this is an example of a writer really, really targeting their audience carefully. It's interesting to consider how different this information might look if it were targeted to teens, adults, or even current smokers looking to stop.
